When and Where Did Porn Come From?

When and Where Did Porn Come From?

It seems to modern people that they discovered sex or that it was different before the 20th century, but they are mistaken.

Let’s observe some benchmark of humankind path to porn starting from France:

  • The XVIII century was a century of social and religious upheavals in France and experienced a kind of a boom of erotic works. However, the politicized society of the Enlightenment reinterpreted the erotic in its own way and in its own goals. The authors were the philosophers, and their pornographic works were targeted mostly at areal reading aloud. The style of the works became more journalistic: only facts, incidents, comments on political events – but with an erotic twist. By the way, freethinking printing houses were located in the Latin Quarter of Paris, a student district, a place of free spirit.

  • The obvious purpose of pornographic pamphlets was the wife of King Louis XVI, namely Marie Antoinette. She was accused of being in connection with the king’s brother and the maids; the madam was portrayed as a nymphomaniac. All this was perceived by the public as the humiliation of the king and the refusal to fulfill his direct royal duties – to secure the crown with an heir. The result is known: when the pamphlets went too far, and the revolution gained its full speed, the queen was executed on the Place de la Concorde, her head was cut off.
  • Under the new government, pornography was banned as a tool with political force. It was on this basis that the famous provocation by Marquis de Sade appeared. And the fantasies of de Sade, as it is known, play an important role in the modern culture of pornography.

An interesting turn of events, Puritan traditions made an impulse to emerging first signs of modern porn:

  • Sex was cut off from the general cultural processes in Europe very long. Pornography is an invention of Victorian science. In most other cultures, the concept of pornography is simply absent. In this sense, we inherited the values of the British Empire.
  • The ancient Greek term “pornography” appeared in the English dictionary of medicine in 1857 and was neutral with medical articles on the subject of prostitution. The word acquired a negative connotation only five years later, and in this form was included to the Webster dictionary. It looked like an attempt to establish a cultural framework.
  • In the history of that time, the discovery of Pompey played an important role. The noble ancient world was full of obscenities. For the Romans, homemade images of explicit scenes were very common. Murals with copulating people occupied all the houses, every room, every wall in the room.

So it’s nothing wrong with images of the human body in the course of physical love – it was so from the ancient times.
